    Default Aerides quinquevulnera v. purpurea

Variety name questioned on last flowering, can't say that a definitive ID has been provided to me so label remains unaltered.
Colour of flower is darker than in pic.

Many of the Aerides species seem to be so similar to each other that I always suspect the accuracy of the specific name. A.quinquevulnerum “ought” to have 5 darker pink spots -quinque means five, and vulnerum means “wounds” , i.e. bleeding . ( think christ on the cross ) .And at leasr a couple of other Aerides species have that distinctive crescent shape, from the presumed nectary. I have the same supposed species ( but not variety) in bud at the moment, and in my case it has not five but six spots- i.e. one on the lip as well as one on each sepal and petal. Do they all have that ? If so, maybe the taxonomic botanist who named it couldn’t count ! I have not seen enough examples to know. Vandaceous plants especially species are rarely seen in UK.

It has a very deep fragrance like the blossom on a lemon tree but you have to be very close the flowers to get it. Nice.
