Wow! You're turned that patio into a tropical paradise. I love it.

I ordered a ton of cattleya while I was off my feet. lol Now you can see why i've been repotting 24-7. I'm getting a very nice tan anyways....

I see a lot of wood baskets. That's becoming one of my favorite ways to grow cattleyas. I like mounting catts but it's hard to display a mounted orchid. With a wood basket it's almost like mounting but I can still set the basket down on a bench or table to display it.

Great bar there Connie love it, but what do you do with all those plants when there are storms or hurricanes approaching? that is a lot to be moving if and when you do, I am trying my best not to yield to temptation and get myself an orchid per month, I will have to set them on the roof LOL I already have my porch filled with various plants including orchids, and then in the yard at the side of the apartment I have got my orchids on one side, hanging and in pots, and on the other side a small kitchen container garden, using pvc guttering I planted parsley, celery, lettuce and cauliflower, peppers etc. and up the back steps to my apartment has an orchid on each step (about eight to twelve) some from what I already had and I still have to cut back some and plant in different pots again which is more room to have to find, but you are so lucky to have all that room and yes the sun is hot here these days but now we are getting rain alternating with the sun every day so that things are cool then a period for them to dry out, it is raining right now and they will be under conditions like if they were in the natural and dry out the same way because of the medium they are in so, I am not worrying again, just keeping my phals in doors so as not to get too wet and rot.

Not to mention, square things are easier to sit on a shelf in a way where they don't forever fall down, and it totally eliminates wasted space. Pots down here...after they fall and break...is often what I use in the bottom of the baskets to hold the big huge wood chips in. I have found that by adding them to the bottom the plant in the basket does better. I think the clay pots hold moister longer than the wood and it helps with root growth. Now that most of the cattleya are in baskets I no longer hear that shattering sound of clay pots as often during the near constant wind events. That is another bonus...lol.

I am forever modifying things, but usually if a big blow is coming and it's just going to rain at first; I let the rain get the plants good and soaked so they weigh more. If it's wind first I get the hose out and water everything until they are water logged. Then I spray with antifungal + bug spray + antibacterial and turn on the ceiling fans to help dry the spray onto the leaves. I start with my smaller/shorter shelves and place them behind the wet bar. Large pots get wedged between those shelves and the back wall. Then I put a ton of plants on the bar, wedged together as tight as possible. I then take my tallest shelves and push them against the front of the bar, weaving twine back and forth between them and the shelves on the backside of the bar. I hang my biggest vandas on the outside of the tall shelves and then strap them down. It's layer after layer, using twine to tie things together. I make sure and tie knots every so often to help add strength to the entire pile. I figure if something comes along big enough to pull all that out, i'm probably going to have a missing roof and major damage and the orchids will be in the trees for miles. Soooo, if that happens the orchids will be the least of my worries. I have insurance. I would be very unhappy to lose my collection, but it wouldn't be the first time i'd lost things for one reason or another...as long as the hubby and I make it through okay it's all good. I have also been known to move the shelves into the house...one time they stayed in the laundry room for a month. The gecko's love the laundry room...
