How do I care for this Phal with monster roots?

Hi everyone,

My mom knowing my Orchid addiction, presented me with this phal today saying it was a little beat up but that she thought i would take great care of it. One of the leaves seems to have suffered some damage and the roots are cracked a little in a few spots but it looks like it is in great shape. I took it out of the pot and it had roots growing out of the bottom. Roots seem to exploding everywhere haha.
It only has two flowers and six or seven buds...my questions is how do I make a humidity tray with the roots growing out of bottom and overflowing out of the pot the way they do??? so they don't actually touch water?

Haha... What a great looking phal! You could flip another clay pot upside-down and sit this pot on top of that one over a regular humidity tray. OR you could get a hanger and hang this pot from above a few inches above your humidity tray.

Thanks BD..you know what i need some of whose awesome plants stands that smartie had for his neos...hmmm...yeah that would be more attractive than clay pots turned upside down lol. I don't think i have anywhere to hang from that would provide enough light as I'm in an apartment with vaulted ceilings.
I can't believe the roots grew out of the bottom (well I can) but so much through one little hole. Now I'm worried about them getting squished. Thanks for the fast response. Hope you enjoy your weekend!!

Aaaah! This is a moment when you can turn your creativity loose! Take a clay or plastic flower pot, decorate with stickers, paints, fabrics, photos cut from garden supply magazines, beads, colored sand. Anything that takes your fancy. that would make an attractive alternative to the plain upside-down clay pot in the humidity tray.

For something that healthy, I would recommend that you just let it do its thing.
It has enough roots to sustain internal fluids that you might not need a humidity tray.
Just wet the roots over the sink every couple of days or so.

If you want to set the plant on a humidity tray, you could use some rhizome stakes to lift the roots above the humidity tray so that they dont touch the water. If the roots get too long, just continue to train them until they grow over the edge of the tray and let them flow down from there.
