This little guy just wants you to remember who is boss. You will have to eventually cut away that plastic pot, but for now, let him grow.

That is why I have given up on plastic pots.
Everytime I repot a plant, it goes into its permanent wood basket.

Is it a cattleya? it seems to have cattleya written all over the roots

Too funny......but hey it's obviously happy. I hate the plastic vanda baskets too...i'm getting very good at surgical removal of plastic and I totally agree about plastic pots as well. I preach natural clay and wood's benefits over plastic to my friends that grow orchids as well. The plants rot in plastic as well here due to high humidity in the summer. I'll bet none of us realised what a learning experience this was going to be. I was just happy to find flowers that bloomed for months at a time!

And notice how deliberate the growth directions are towards the holes.
The roots did not just ramble on inside the pot until it happened upon a hole. It "knew" where the holes were and directed growths toward it.

Its funny when I initially transition an orchid to a wood basket. The roots seem to be caught by surprise at all the options and could not determine which direction to grow at first. Its like a confused driver trying to pick a spot in an empty parking lot.

Interestingly though, this is the only one (at least as of this point) that has done so. Oh, and John, yes it is a catt .... or more specifically Pot Burana Beauty 'Burana'
