    Default South Padre Island

    I'm going down there this summer to visit my partners mother. I'd like to give her an orchid that can either be naturalized or stay outside most of the time. Summers are hot and humid and winters are mostly cool and dry. They do get the very rare freeze but never very hard and never for more than a couple of hours. Any suggestions?

    I would think Laelia anceps, a Mexican native, would be a good choice. It is reported that it will tolerate short periods of temps down to 22 degrees and can be naturalized

    You read my mind. I was considering Laelia anceps I need reseach dendrobiums and see if there any that would do well.

    I am pretty good at mind reading

    For cool, dry winters, I would look at Aussie Dends like kingianum, speciosum, fleckeri, gracilicaule, falcorostrum and jonesii.

    I'm gonna go with the anceps and kingianum . No way is she getting a speciosum! I love them and have no space so there is no way I'm giving one away as a gift!!!!
