Just a couple of the plants on my balconey

Strobilanthes dyerianus (aka Persian Shield) was reduced to a stick over the winter -- I'm certain my derth of humidity was to blame. Thought about throwing it out but the stem stayed green so I figured I'd see what would happen. I was hoping it would get considerably taller than when I brought it in -- it didn't -- but at least it filled out




I really like the foliage on these.

I like the purple leaves on that Persian Shield. It is really nice. Does the plant get really large?

wow, the amorpophallus looks awesome.. how many plants are in each pot? and which species? gotta love the stinkies! I am actually amazed at how big these grow given the chance... an Amorpophallus titanium was at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and it was almost up to the ceiling of the greenhouse!

It maxes out at 3-4ft and is a tender perennial.

In the big pot there are about 8 bulbs -- the central main bulb and 7 satellite bulbs that were still attached to the central bulb. The smaller pot has 4 -- the central and 3 satellites.

As to the species, I'm actually at a loss for now. I got it from the parents of a friend of mine. They had purchased it as a "Voodoo lily". Since the foliage did not match that of Dracunculus vulgaris (which I have seen before) I assumed it was Sauromatum venosum (which is also known as a voodoo lily -- blast those common names!). BUT upon doing a Google search, I found that the foliage does NOT match any of those depicted. The foliage does seem to be that of a Amorphophallus, as you mentioned, but I have no idea as to which species. It might be A. konjac ... or not.

i wonder if the flower is the only way to work out the species or if the mottling on the stems can be used as well...
