Paphiopedilum lowii var.sumatra

Hello to all, my name is Pere Arche and alive in Barcelona, Spain. 15 years ago that I have orchids and my favorite are the Paphiopedilum. My they preferred are the species multiflowered and the Brachypetalum. I want to present you to my favorite one, Paphiopedilum lowii var.sumatra. Another of my favorite is Paphiopedilum insigne that with the climate of Barcelona all the grows very well year al exterior. I expect to continue enjoying the messages of this forum that seems but moved that that of Yahoo.

If you are having trouble posting the photo, it might be too big. Try making the photo smaller and see if that will work.

I have just joined too and I specialize in Paphs as well. Your climate is better than mine I am sure. Do you keep insigne outside ALL THE TIME ? If that is the case I think I should move to Barcelona.

Hi Pere,

I just received Phillip Cribb's paph book (The Genus Paphiopedilum) and for fun tried to lookup lowii var. sumatra. It's not listed. The variations he describes are: richardianum, lynniae (both sometimes referred to separate species), and aureum, which is the albino form.

Is sumatra a legitimate var., and Cribb's isn't a complete listing of the species, or is it a mistake?

The book is phenominal by the way. The photos and descriptions will send you on a species shopping spree!

Hi Piper, the book buy it 2 years ago and is excellent, in you photograph and drawings. My Paphiopedilum lowii I arrive for a contact with an unknown person that I send me an email offering Paphiopedilum. A year but late I knew that was sought by Interpol as the dealer of plants. Works in the Jardin Botanico of Jakarta. Never but I have wanted to have contact with the although continues I send me emails. In the first one email, the to say that was var. sumatra ????? I have not found it in any place that variety. You that to think??

Looking at the internet, there seems to be a couple of listing of Paph lowii var sumatra but no pictures. One of them actually just shows it as Paph lowii "Sumatra". I think that maybe it isn't quite an accepted varietal status but more a cultivar or clone name.

Paphiopere, the easiest way to add a picture is to clickon the button "Manage attachments" in the area called "Additional Options" just below where you type your messages. This will bring up a new 'screen'. You click on the browse and find the picture from your files.

You will need to resize the picture file and now I can't remember how big they are suppose to be but I think it has to be less than 200 kb.

never heard of var. sumatra, but there's a lot of informal naming in the trade. Perhaps it is a selfing of a cultivar by that name, or just something that someone made up. I've seen pics of lowii with solid dusty magenta petals dubbed "var. vinicolor". It of course is not a separate population and should be given a clonal name instead. And check out the 4 billion named "varieties" of paph venustum!
