Phal Orchid Root rot

Today I finally figured out why my phalaenopsis leaves were turning yellow and leathery: root rot. I removed the plant from the grocery story plastic pot, picked off all the old bark, cut off all the really rotten roots (about 20%) and repotted in fresh bark and in a more appropriate pot. There are three new roots sprouts at the plant base, so I think this plant can be saved. Now what should I do? Do I need to use a fertilizer that will promote root growth? Oh, yes and the orchid is in full flower.

What do I do now?

Good for you! Now, JC2499, do you have a name, and where in the world are you? By the way, I hope the roots were cut with a sterile knife...Otherwise the rot may come back. AND...hope you dusted those freshly cut roots with a little sulphur dust...to keep the germs away! Oh, I'm Joyce and I live in Seattle. I'm still trying to figure out this forum! Yes, I sterilized the knife, but I don't have sulfur dust. This is my first year with phalaenopsis orchids; I've been pretty successful with dendrobiums, well lets just say I can get them to bloom. thanks Betty!

Well, if it is in full bloom, I would recommend cutting that flower spike off and letting the plant grow some roots. Also a root hormone would be good to stimulate root growth. Since the blooms are open, you can enjoy them in a vase. They should last awhile.

Thanks. I've just done it. Would you recommend enclosing the plant in a large plastic bag to act as a greenhouse to up the humidity while its recovering? or I'm I asking for more rot issues? Thanks again!

Hi Joyce,

Best post a photo and let us see just how bad-off this orchid is now. It may just need to be repotted and placed in a low light situation and allowed to grow.
