Dendrobium Judith Nakayama

I have raised this plant in SH since Dec.2010. This is the first flower, from two buds. (My first ever Den.Flower).(Correct spelling: Den.Judith Nakayama).

it is a cute dendrobium orchid, John. I like the orange in the lip.

Congratulations John, very beautiful, it seems to possess a lot of 'cruentum' in its parentage.

It is very nice but to me it looks more a lot more like Den Dawn Maree. are you sure? I think Den Judith Makayama looks a lot more like Den formosum or Den infundibulum than Den. cruentum.

yours is the only photo that looks distinctly different. Where did you get it from? I would ask the seller.

I think Eric is right in saying that there is a lot of cruentum in this cross - the shape and and the green veins would attest to that. However Stefpix is also quite correct in pointing out that it doesn't look like Den Judith Nakayama, but neither does it look like formosum or infundiulum.

Dawn Maree crosses are very complex and backcrossing to one or more of its parents and offsprings hasn't made it any easier to ID. Most times we have to depend on the info supplied by the vendors and we know how chancy that can be. However this may be of some help ....

Den Judith Nakayama = Dawn Maree x Formidible

Dawn Maree = formosum x cruentum : Formidible = formosum x infundibulum

I meant that the Den Judith Nakayama photos I looked up do look a lot more like formosum or infundiulum than the one in this thread. Basically Den Judith Nakayama is 50 % of D. formosum.

I have a Dendrobium Roongkamol Vejvarut that is D Dawn Maree (formosum x cruentum) x D. formosum . Have not seen it bloom yet. But I am suspecting the one in this thread is not Den Judith Nakayama as it looks almost like Den cruentum Dendrobium cruentum - Google Search
which is only 25% of the parentage . Anyway these nigro-hirsute Dendrobiums are all nice looking.

Thanks for the name of Dawn Marie x formosum. Mine flowered for the first time recently and it is a beauty. Improvement in size and form over Dawn Maree and as large as formosum but with better shape and substance. Overall better than both parents. I didn't photograph it because it had only one bloom. I hope to get more flowers the second time.

Dendrobium is such a large genera that it is divided into about 11 sections ; all the species in any one section are generally similar to all the others in that section. A great help in identification and culture.
These dendrobes with fine black hairs on the canes are in a section which is called - in the older books, "nigro hirsute" but that esaily remembered , and clearly recognisable name ( meaning black and hairy) is considered to be politically uncorrect nowadays , and has been replaced with a quite unmemorable name which I have forgotten.
However, the interesting thing about John's post is that he says he grows this in S/H. I have had a lot of success with nobile section dendrobes that way - keikis often flower withing less than a year of being potted up and stood in the water, but I have not ciucceeded with any nigro-hirsute section ones ( and I have tried a couple of times) . I'll try again - there are several really lovely ones to have a go at. Thanks John.

Cattan! couldn't the Dendrobium that started this thread be actually be Green Lantern? my Dendrobium Roongkamol came in bud but the buds blasted, probably due to the different environment change.

Would be great to have a photo even if it is just one bloom! Your D Green Lantern looks great. Do you think it is more vigorous than the Dendrobium Roongkamol do you grow them the same way? How do you grow them?
