fishy stuff...

well, I've finally got around to getting some fishies... there's eight in total all swimming in my pond....



the water is a little muddy... so I was wondering what others do to keep the water clear...

I went to a fish shop and they wanted to sell me this thing called a UV thingie-majig for $499, which (even if it is in Aussie banana republic pesos) is a lot of money that could be spent on orchids instead.

But I do want the best for my fishies... so what do y'all do?

Cant you get a couple of filters or something to clear the water up??

UV devices for fish? A little too high tech for me... I'd go for a filter system that you can run on an as needed basis.

Of course, now that we have glow in the dark pigs to go with the glow in the dark orchids and fish, perhaps UV is the way to go!

Hey Tim,

Talk to your garden supply place. There are things you can float in your pond that do some sort of natural filtering and they really do keep the water clear. I can't remember what they're actually called, but their about 8" square and 1" thick.

BD, you guys have serious ponds - do you have any idea what I'm talking about?

I think you are talking about Barley pads. Many places sell mats and pads made of barley fiber that are supposed to help keep ponds clear.

That sounds about right - as I recall, they're a rough-textured woven fiber of some sort.

don't they go off? I mean like orchid mix... after geting wet all the time... they must start to rot...

If my brain hasn't totally rotted, I think they're good for a time - like 6 months or so. I won't swear to that. It's all fuzzy, but they'll get you through the better part of a pond season.

well my pond... which is a bit like those above ground pools... basically set me back the cost of the pond liner $15, the water pump $20 and time of scrounging around for bricks and building them up... they are not even set but just sitting on top of each other...

course, I'd imagine the other ponds I've seen on here may have been a bit more than the above.. so I guess it really is a matter of what ur prepared to spend....
