A snake amongst my orchid pots!

Good morning fellow orchid growers! Yesterday I went to take a look at my orchids and suddenly a small pencil thin snake ran away from my orchid pots! I now it's not a dangerous snake to humans, but can it be dangerous for my orchids? I found pieces of bark and clay from my orchid potting mix on the floor, so the snake must have been on or maybe inside the pots. Should I do something to get rid of it or just let it be? I don't want to harm it if it's not necessary, but if I must, I'll do it for my precious girls. Thanks!

It won't harm the orchids. It could be looking for lizards or frogs to eat.....or looking to lay eggs or have babies. Be careful it is not poisonous.

Snakes happen! OK, maybe that's not the exact saying. I get a lot of tiny frogs in my orchid pots and I think that's why the snakes come around. The snakes won't hurt the orchids and either will frogs for that matter.

Ok, another reason not to move to a warm climate! I really, really don't like snakes and I don't care how harmless they are or how many mice, frogs or other pests they eat. They can do it a few acres away from my home and never let me see them. - martha

I am forever worried about things that suprise you. Snakes are usually more afraid of me and slither off here. My problem is the darn gecko's...or anoles...are forever jumping on me and making me scream like a girl. I so hate that.

There are no poisonous snakes in Puerto Rico. The small ones eat insects and small frogs. The native Puertorrican Boa eats mice and larger insects. They are GOOD for the orchids because they keep the pests away. They like rough surfaces to peel away their skin (I think its twice a year).

We didn't have pythons or boas either in Florida till about 10 years ago. You never know what the heck people collect and then escape.

No thank you Cathy, snakes have plenty of mice and besides your frogs would not survive the sub-zero Winters here. Although my neighbor did find a tropical tree frog living in her laundry room in the dead of Winter a few years ago - go figure. - martha
