Gongora growing culture

I was told that Gongora has to be grown in a greenhouse. However, I have seen pictures that many people grow it in a regular pot, even clay pots, and the flowers hang down from the pot like Paphinia Herrarae. Can I grow this species in a regular pot and indoor (I don't have a greenhouse)? Will the flower spike come through the bottom of the pot like Stanhopea (I was told this is the reason it has to be grown in a basket and watering will mess up the flooring)?

The reason that Gongora are grown in a greenhouse is due to the temperatures that they need.Most are warm to hot growing and require very high humidity.As for the type of pot required.It would be better to grow them in a basket as the spikes come from the base of the p/bulbs and are pendulas,but in saying that if one is careful and can direct the spike of the side of the pot them I see no reason why a standard pot could not be used.

I could not tell you as I have not grown them,as my conditions are toooooooo cold.

Hi, This is an old post but I'll put in my experience. The one gongora species I have is kept over winter at approx 40 to 55 degrees F. In the summer they are outside (on the Niagara Peninsula ) I just put one very large in d flower out on the curb for sale. Normaley I just discard them. Good luck D.D.

Hi , Nora, through my experience the spikes come from the base and it is very easily to differentiate from the new shoot.Basically it will grow faster and if you see them than you can gently hold it and try to bring it out from the pot.Be careful the spikes is very soft and easily snap. Unlike stanhopea I can use plastic pot, clay or even basket.Medium that I always used are spag. moss or perlite. You can use coconut chips, this guy really like it.Stanhopea must used basket no choice because the spikes always facing down and very huge flowers.
