What is your greatest sacrifice for your orchid.

Hi All,

Could you please share your story of your sacrifice on your plants, example how you bought them, protect them or rescue them?

My story was when there is a typhoon in our country that I went out in the middle of my work and travel while the storm is surging just to get home because a coconut tree fell on my babies.

I have nothing that compares to that. I only risk family sensure for bringing in more "flowers". I also have managed to work with a friend so that when I order the next batch that I shouldn't get I have them sent to her and then she brings them by when no one else is home.

Ha! That is too funny. My biggest sacrifice is just the time it takes...and I've given up my morning dawdling over coffee and the newspaper to save some time.

Time and extra incentive not to get a cat or two (the furry kind).

If my plants get an illness, I spend a ridiculous amount of time helping them. My bay laurel came down with a severe infestation of scale so every week I spent several hours removing the scale from leaves and stems with cotton balls and alcohol as I couldn't use a systemic (herb). I just went through black rot with many of my cattleyas and, twice a day, I went over the infected orchids with alcohol until the threat to each plant had passed. This isn't as much of a sacrifice as traveling home in a typhoon, though. I'm glad you saved them.

Because my orchid collection outgrew its 4 foot wide by 6 foot tall shelf in the only suitable south window of the house (my bedroom), I was forced to set up another 3 foot wide shelf in the only other window that gets decent light, a west window also in my bedroom.

Because my bed is only two inches away from the south shelf and flush against the west one, and I refuse to downsize to a twin size bed, I had no choice but to sacrifice. . . making my bed in the morning.

The sad consequence of this is I am hesitant to post pictures of my growing area here, and any visitors to the house only get to see the blooming plants located elsewhere in the house. Also, I have to stand on my bed to water the west shelf and my overgrown Sharry Baby occasionally tickles me in my sleep. It's a tragic tale of sacrifice, I know.

Mine has to be 'sleep'! In direct relation to my job as a glorified spud peeler and trained 'cheese on toast' maker with the skill of throwing all leftovers into a pan adding cream and blending it all calling it a soup which cant be labelled until one finds out what it tastes like!

Always had the need to relax, enjoy wind down time for a few hours after work before sleep time. Chosen purely to remind me that im not a robot or a work horse and have a right to a lil bit of quality of life! As a chef i finish late night and with above mentioned invest time through the night hours pottering and tending to my indoor mini tropical garden! Anyone else do repotting at 3am in the morning?! Health checks? signs of pests diseases? Feeding/ watering/ spraying/general tlc and more or less dithering and faffin, messin about!. Then ofcourse the internet Forum fix and mini missions searching/ looking at plants for sale etc.

This is where the true 'addiction' element dominates my personality, all or nothing and never half way. Bit of defiance aswell I think kidding myself that i will actually have an early night next day! Yeah!Right? as if! and my shifts are pretty set with 11am till2-3pm and 4-5pm till 11-12 mignight!

On a humorous note, pre jan 2011 when i banned alcohol from my body permanently, these sessions were carried out about the same times with same habits /tasks but Drunk! Imagine head butting mounts, struggling to make mounts, knocking plants over scattering the floor with crap, dyeing my fingers blue with fertilizer, brainstorming the most stupid ideas that id wished id never started and more seriously breaking spikes. hehehehehehehe

I keep a ceiling-height magnolia tree in my sun room to hang my mounted orchids on it The tree was growing too close to the house and we had to cut it. I saw it lying there with my husband getting ready to cut it into pieces, and then the vision came to me... It crowds the room, but looks good!

Thats definelty captured my curiosity, the magnolia, have you posted any pics of this on here to show of your plants/ blooms. Thought i was bad with twisting walnut branches and a oak stump for my epiphyte/ tropical plant collection. Theres a sacrifice here aswell, every now and then great clusters of yellow fungi burst out of the branches with the most overpowering sulphur smell, hence their name. All in the name of aesthetic values! At moment i can blame the orchids, but no blooms no alibi!
