    Default Unmounting an orchid...

I have watched the spagnum on this mounted Ascofinitia slowly turn a very unhealthy black color and decided today was time to pull the bad stuff from under the twine. I removed the twine first and then began picking at the bad spagnum. I was suprised that as I pulled small pieces of bark were coming off as well. It took a few minutes of turning the stick and pulling junk out before I suddenly realized what I was pulling out wasn't old spagnum but rotted wood. In fact the entire stick had turned into a sort of sponge-like material and in one area a root had grown into the middle of the stick and was happily tunneling upwards. I carefully removed as much of the rotted wood (in between dropping it as ants ran out of holes and up my arms...whee fun) as possible and in the end decided to attach it to a slatted plank. As healthy as the roots are I'd imagine it won't have any trouble attaching to it's new wood. I have to say, this was a first for me and i'm wondering what i'll do when it's time to remount the large Schomb that currently is spreading all over a piece of driftwood. lol

I am finally getting to some of the repotting that has needed to be done around here. As soon as I get the next batch of baskets i'll be doing a bunch of Cattleya. I can tell they need it because I water one day and the next day you cannot tell I watered them at all they are so light. Now that it is beginning to cool off some I have to get caught up.

Good job. I've been confronting this issue myself as I grow more orchids on mounts. It definitely helps to know how other growers are handling this problem. Thanks for posting this.

Good job there Connie. It will happily take over that slat. A few years ago, before I started using the plastic slotted basket/pots I had most of my Vandaeceous mounted, when their mounts started to rot, I simply placed them into baskets, added some charcoal around and that was fine enough for them.
