To repot or not to repot?

My Oncidium Sherry Baby 'Sweet Fragrance' has out grown its 8" clay pot. It currently has 3 spikes so I was wondering should I wait for blooms and the spike to die back before I transplant. I've read post that say not to repot when In bloom but don't remember any comments about spikes.

I'd advise against it. The blooms don't last extremely long, so just repot following blooming...

Repotting will stress the plant and it probably won't bloom well, if at all. It doesn't hurt an oncidium to be root bound or to be growing out over the side of the pot. Sometimes they even grow better that way. I would deffinately wait until the orchid has finished it's bloom cycle before repotting. Enjoy your flowers.

I have often repotted oncidium plants in spike and bud. As long as you do not disturb the root system too much, it would be fine to repot. But, waiting till after blooming is a safe bet to ensure you get the blooms from the buds you have now. Enjoy this wonderful orchid.

Well I just got back from Utah and got a nice surprise! When I left I only had three spikes on my Oncidium, now I have 7! They sprouted up in the three days I was gone! I am a very happy camper now, 2 spikes is the most I've ever gotten from this orchid. I will definitely wait to repot after the blooms. Hope I get to actually enjoy them, I leave for London Saturday and then Montreal after only being back one day from London :-(!
