Newly Built, Custom Fab Greenhouse

Some pictures of my newly built greenhouse.
This is a 16x24 coldframe overbuilt to "withstand" hurricane season here in Charleston.

The construction, which was completed by myself and my father, took approximately 36 hrs over the course of the winter. If anyone is interested I can start a thread detailing the construction.
Needed summertime improvements include 50% or 70% shade, I havent decided on that yet and would love some advice. I am also going to retrofit the sides so that I can roll the poly up. This is badly needed since the fan runs quite often and the resulting RH suffers. My irrigation is supplied by a rainwater harvesting system from the adjacent barn, and runs through 1"pvc.


I used old pallets and concrete blocks for my benches. The height thus far has proven optimal.



I am keeping a new order of orchids in a High Humidity Box until I get the shade up and stabilize the RH



All of my orchids are kept against the East facing back wall as the light is less intense there. All of my orchids are recovering from a Boisduval Scale infestation as a result of keeping them in the greenhouse at school over the winter/spring. I waged an all out war on the scale and expect the majority of the orchids to recover quite nicely.

A Keiki Machine! Some even bloomed while still on the spike. I planted the four that were produced into Staghorn Fern planters at school.




Regardless of the scale, the school greenhouse did allow me to revel in the winter blooms of these two Catts

Great set up Ryan. You should be able to do so much with this kind of space and I would think considering your location that heat and humidity should not be to much of a problem much of the year. May I ask how cold you get in winter? and does the air dry out considerably at that time of year? AL

Finally got shade on the house (40%) and moved everything around.





New additions:
-3 Flasks, Vanda coruelea, Dendrobium spectabile, Aegreacum sesquipidale
planted in individual plug trays.





It doesn't get too considerably cold. We had a very mild winter on the coast this last year. But on average, it gets below freezing for a bout a month, month and a half.
Yearly RH averages dont differ too much either. About a ten percent difference between summer and winter.

Great Job!!! I can't imagine the number of cymbidium you'll be able to grow there......DELICIOUS!!!
