Cymbidiums: thought I'd give y'all a crack at this one!

Are these spikes (infloresences) or new growth? It's not the right time of year, right? It has already flowered off another Pbulb and these showed up last week






What do y'all think? Sorry for the big and out of focus photos...sun's going down. The one all the way right looks to be new growth, but the others are fatter and more spear shaped. Time will definitely tell, but what are y'all's opinion?

It's really way too early for buds on most Cymbidiums, but there are some fall bloomers. The first photo looks too round to be new growth, but it's really hard to tell without perspective. What part of the country are you in? I'm in So Cal and all my new growth started in late spring, spikes usually start in Dec - Jan.

Hey Diane, I'm in NorCal near the water. It's really strange, but I do believe at least one is a new infloresence! The new growth usually shows leaves at that tallest one's height, but it still may be too soon to tell. I had blooms from late spring to summer and then these puppies popped up all of a sudden after I cut off the old inflo.. I have five in all and they are in varying stages. Here's more photos taken inside with more light so they might be more palatable and easier to see :-):






I'm hoping for flowers as the first flowering at purchase had two spikes and this past spring/summer only saw one. Five would be a hoot, but I'm still not positive on these.

Course being the expert Cymbid grower (NOT) I had to pipe in...

They do look kinda rounder than new growths... and as Diane says there are the early or even late flowering types..

What type is it? Name? mini or standard.. colour?

Heya! They are standard as far as I can tell, NoID. I do have a photo of the blooms here:



Sorry the photo is so bad, those flowers look so pretty compared to the darker ones I got from having them outside :-) Notice the dark centered one? I guess I bumped it and when I was a newbie, I thought perhaps it was some strange anomaly in the coloring :-)

VERY Pretty minibot. So up in the Bay Area?? I was born and raised there. Or further up the coast?
Hmmm... My folks still live in the area and my mom has raised cymbs since the 70's. (Actually planted some in the ground when she lived in the east bay... and they grew and flowered). So I checked with her, and she does not have any kind of new growths poking out of any her collection right now - she has about 25 still. So you've got an unique case on your hands. But since it sounds like it flowerd late--- into summer, if it hasn't put out any new growths since then I would think they were growths and not inflourecenses..(Spelling??) Yet, that one is so round. Well, now you have to keep in touch so we know what becomes of those guys! I'm gonna go give my cymbs a thorough checking this morning!

Certainly look like spikes to me.
My Cymbidium eburneum has a sheath , i was told it was probably an auxhillary branch but i,ve examined it closely now it,s a bit bigger & definately a sheath.
What,s the weather been like ?
Cool nights ?
Do you water in the evenings @ all ?

Just from the photos it looks like new growth to me. Although, the round one makes me wonder too!?! Let the folks who grow more of these chime in here, but the spikes on Cym. we have here come out from between the first and second set of leaves at the base of the PB. These appear to come from the base of the PB itself and that makes me guess that they are new growth. But it is only a guess! Maybe you will be lucky enough to have BOTH!!! Please keep us posted.
