New flower spike on Phal? (Macro)

Hi guys,

I only just noticed this as I was watering - I'm sure it wasn't there a few weeks back when I bought the plant.

I'm pretty sure it's not a new root as they show a grey/green colour, right? So, is it a new flower spike just pushing through?

I'm thinking it might be a root since it is so thick - but time will tell!! I hope it is a spike though!!

Hmm, I'm thinking spike as it looks 'mitteny' already. Could also be a basal keiki though. Fingers crossed for something other than a root.

I think it is spike cause the color almost similar like the old spike and could be keiki too, congrats.

So, that's 2 for a flower spike and 1 for a root - sorry Brutal Dreamer I am hoping it's a spike as it's sort of pointing upwards. A keiki though would be a real bonus - it'll be my first!

It's coming from this phal. What I think is 'Kung's Green Star'(?). I'll keep you posted!

sorry but i vote for root as a mitten shape on a spike is more distinct. The colourations looks like the tips of roots i'm not sure spikes will be that heavy dark but.... Of course give it a few more weeks and let us know the verdict

I go with 'root' too.... but you never know. Beautiful coloured Phal I love it; I used to have a very similar coloured one but ufortunately I managed to kill it.. . fingers crossed for you that it turns out to be more than a root although they are good too!

Actually the flower spikes on this Phal are black at the base and only turning a dark green as they rise (see photo of existing flower spike below). But as BD said "time will tell".

The more I look at it the more I think basal keiki.
