I have always been fascinated by 'mini' orchids but find them rather delicate and difficult to grow. Some months back my vendor had some 'novelty' phals for sale and I got this little gem of a miniature phal.. This may not be the smallest phal around but definitely the smallest I have ever seen in bloom, It is still growing in its original thumbpot and has 2 spikes, each bearing 5 blooms, measuring 16mm x 18mm. For comparison I have included a shot with the tip of the pencil next to the flower. Sorry for the blurry pencil as I was holding it in my left hand whilesqueezing the shutter with my right and these old hands aren't exactly very steady. Phalappendiculata has imparted dwarfism to this hybrid and Phal equestris is no giant either.
