Inobulbon Munificum 'Pauwela' Culture?

Okay, folks...I've got a doozy here...at least for me. I received another free plant in an order (this keeps happening to me...I feel like there's an orchid fairy blessing my deliveries or something)...and at first glance I thought it was a Cattleya.

Well, then I read the tag, and it turned out it's a Inobulbon Munificum 'Pauwela.' The pics I find on the web are kind of bizarre...it's a very um, hairy plant, but the blooms look like they'll be nice.

Anyone ever raise one of these? From the limited info on the web, it says to give conditions similar to Dendrobiums. I have to admit I'm a bit intimidated by this one.

Does anyone know how big these things get and the size of the blooms? I couldn't find any info on that online.

Bump! I've seen one of these on here recently. I don't remember who posted it but it was gorgeous! Do a thread title search. "Grow like a dendrobium" isn't helpful really. Which dendrobium? I'm sure that question wasn't addressed.

Hi Jenn the condition that you need to give is similar like Dendrobium they need in between dry at the root level surprisingly the plant producing many small flowers and long lasting too, The pseudobulb diameter may exceed more than 10 inches and the length more than 6 inches in optimum environment. Oh my goodness!!! That's amazing!! Thank you so much for your help and for posting this pic! Those pseudobulbs are massive! The one I received must be a seedling. It's in a 3" pot and it looks very much like a Cattleya that just forgot to shave its bulbs!

Mine (lost one winter to a late propane delivery) was in a 6" wooden slat basket of coarse bark, hung up high, along side of my ascocendas. Got watered (with dilute fertilizer) about every 3-4 days.The back of the flowers are pretty neat, too.

This name is a synonym.

Dendrobium munificum (Finet) Schltr., Repert. Spec. Nov. Regni Veg. Beih. 1: 444 (1912).
This name is accepted.

So culture is not LIKE a Dendrobium, it IS one. It certainly puts on an impressive show.

Ahhh!!! Very nice. Thanks for explaining! Although I'd like to give a big PBBBBBBTTTTTT!!! to the orchid people who are responsible for mucking up the names of plants and confusing us hobby growers yet again.

I can see why you hung it up high....the flowers appear to hang downward naturally...this would be one pain-in-the-butt to stake. But my husband has a "no orchids hanging from the ceiling policy," so I will probably end up staking it anyway. Well, when it blooms...in, say, five years (it's quite the little thing at the moment) I'll be sure to post pics!! I might post them sooner, too...I find the hairy bulbs to be quite fascinating.
