Aerangis brachycarpa
I started collecting this genus of African orchids a few years ago, and after doing very well with one particular species, pursued them, so far have approx 15 or maybe even 20 differeht species out of the 50 or so which seem to be known. The most recent acquisitions - all seed raised "Near Flowering Size" when I bought them 12 months ago, have mostly grown very well - a couple have even started to produce offsets , on their way to being multi-growthed. Of course they are monopodials, so will continue to grow and flower from each growth, and the only way to get a lot of spikes is to get these offsets. Now about half a dozen species are in spike , but alas a couple of spikes have rotted off. They are all grown on cork bark mounts ("plaques")or in open compost in baskets, and sprayed more or less daily. Evidently too much, in the flowering season. So I have shifted the others which have developing spikes into a place whre they will miss out on the daily sprayings.
Whatever ; here is the remains of the first spike after the growing end rotted off.Fabulous scent at night ! designed no doubt to lure its pollinator, night flying moth, from miles away.
