This also bloomed recently. The male version of the flower, inset shows the trigger that releases the pollen - at a somewhat alarming velocity. Fortunately there were enough blooms to entertain both myself and a couple visitors.

not that I could tell, Sue. might have been a little something, slightly sweet, but I wouldn't swear to it.
the nectar dripping from the spike was very tasty though.

LOL!!! I would never have thought to taste the nectar - or anything else for that matter... I'm phobic about natural toxins, I guess. Really cool plant tho..

Could you give the general growing needs...potting mix, water, light?

This one is growing in diatomite, watered about every other day during growth, will stop when the leaves fall. it's in an east window, which may account for the male bloom; the sex of the flowers depends on the strength/duration of the light. temps are moderate and it seems to be OK, however I have read that these like it warm; humidity in the 60s most of the time....

Another question...what is diatomite? The conditions you describe fit what I can offer so I'll keep it on the list. Thanks for the info.

diatomite is a stone composed of fossil remains of diatoms (diatomes?) the stuff I'm using from fresh water diatoms, I believe from Australia. A google search will find sources and information.

it's very light, absorbant - it fizzes like Alka-Selzer when first wetted - and there is some debate over whether or not it releases/provides mineral nutrients to the plants. silicates, I believe. I use it for drainage or to loosen other mediums, I have heard of folks using it in S/H but I don't know how effectively....
