    Default Rhyncostylis coelestis 'Pink'

    I have mentioned elsewhere that the weather this year has been weird but it seems to be very agreeable to my durian (that stinky,thorny fruit we call the'King of Fruits' here)and I'm having a bumper harvest this year. And the Paphs and the Aerides and Rhyncostylis love this weather. I have been lamenting the fact that my Aer lawrenceae hasn't bloomed the last 2 years but I noticed the beginning of 2 spikes on it ; and after the Rhy retusa and gigantea it is now the turn of my Rhy coelestis (only 1 spike this year).

    This is the pink form of Rhy coelestis.

    That's beautiful! The plant looks similar to a vanda. Is it related? Same growing conditions?

    Yes smaller cousin of the strap leaved vanda, There has been a lot of hybridising between the related genera of vanda, rhynchostylis, aerides, ascocentrum, neofinetia, renanthera, arachnis , paraphalenopsis and papilionanthe etc.

    Gorgeous photos, Yew.

    Too bad durian are not offered over here (at least I have never seen them). I would be game for trying one at least once.

    I saw Anthony Bourdain (on our Asian Food Channel TV) enjoying and praising the durian, but his opening the durian fruit leaves much to be desired. Most Caucasians can't stand the smell - an Italian described his experience as ' like eating the best Italian ice-cream in a smelly public toilet'. An American Peace Corps volunteer teacher here in the early 60s, William Sweeters, was the greatest durian eater I've ever met - he could 'out-eat' all our local chaps 2 to 1 with ease.During the durian season he would have durian almost every day; and that would have made any local ill. People who knew him still speak in awe of his durian eating prowess. I mention his name in case someone knows him because i've lost touch with him. He was last known to be residing in California.

    Yes but the fragrance though similar to Rhy retusa is not as strong.
