So when I received this in the mail it was pretty much in the shape you see now. It has grown a few leaves and about two roots in a year. I was wondering if I could induce root growth by cutting the top off. I recently added the bag of Nutricote to see if it would induce more growth. The roots that it grew appear to be dying.

I get good results using kelp, seems to help vandas flush out new roots, there is a good post started by Angela,9/28 2012, one root vanda that has some good info. I topped a vanda about a month ago because it looked dead on the bottom , when I cut the top it was still nice and green inside, I followed the advice of Amey and plant is doing well, I put it in a small plastic basket with charcoal and water or mist 3 x a day, thanks Amey. good luck

I would suggest you get a bucket of warm water, add 1 tablespoon honey per 3 liters of water, or 3 tablespoons per 2 gallons of water. If you have superthrive, add a couple drops of that and a few drops of physan or antifungal. Let your vandas roots dangle into the water for 10-15 minutes. Pour left over water on your yard plants. They will love the added fertilizer as well. Honey has it's own antifungal properties, but as a sugar it is instant and easy to use food that will help them recover. Never give sick plants regular fertilizer as they cannot handle it. It will just burn the new roots. Also; when in distress/shock, I keep my vanda's shaded a little bit more. Hope your vanda recovers for you soon...as long as it remains green there is hope. It will usually look awful before growing nice new healthy growth. Be patient; vandas are the slowest growers when it comes to recovering.

The roots have Fusarium, most vandas have at least some Fusarium infected roots. If you find the point on a root where the collapsed/shriveled part meets the plump/living tissue, you can cut into it and see purple coloring. This is indicative of Fusarium. You need to use a systemic fungicide like Thymol. But the first thing you should do is follow Connie's advice! It's more important to have a strong, growing plant than to just hit it with chemicals. Ok, so against the general wisdom of the forum, I topped the orchid leaving about and inch of stem ( I cut it until I hit living tissue). This was done a couple of weeks ago, I am please to announce that I have a new root! I mounted it to a piece of wood and surrounded it with coconut fiber and placed it back into its basket. I am very excited that my experiment turned out ok, I think I saved its life! Oh, I gets watered twice a day like the other Vandas and I also dipped it into rooting hormone.
