dendrobium superbum anosmum question

I bought this guy about a month ago from a grower in Hawaii. It has three older canes hanging over the side of the pot and has about 6 newer growths growing straight up.

The new growths have almost doubled in length and are still growing and look great. I see new root growth on top of the bark. However, the older canes seem a little more yellow now and a few leaves are turning yellowish.

I'm just confused as one part of the plant seems very healthy and happy, but the other three canes seem kind of sad. This is a pic from a month ago when I bought it.



This is a picture from tonight. Sorry it's dark and this is with a flash. I will try to get a better pic in the morning. As you can see it seems to be growing well, but those bottom leaves are getting a bit yellow. Any insight is greatly appreciated.

My den superbum came with a number of leafless canes and canes that have leaves that are now yellowing and dropping off too. I'm not freaking out because of the canes that were naked when I got the plant. I assume it is part of the lifecycle of the orchid. I also have 3 new canes growing, full of leaves. I think the leafless canes are the ones that bloom. And it DOES want a rest for blooming in the spring. Halloween to Valentines Day.

That is my experience over the last 5 months with mine.

And BTW- All of my canes cascade over the pots edge. I have it hanging. I'll post a pic if you want.

Oh good Mine is kind of hanging, it's sitting in a clay pot that is hanging from the side of the arbor so that the older canes can hang down. As you can see, the new growths are starting to bend over and will probably all be hanging in the next month. This thing is growing incredibly fast.

I've read all about the dormant period and am looking forward to going through it to get to the awesome blooms. Thanks again, I was so worried about it. I thought maybe the older canes were depressed after their move from Hawaii to SE Texas - ha ha!

Mine is also sitting in a clay pot hanging off a plant stand like thing so it gets filtered morning sun.

It's normal for this Dendrobium to shed leaves from the older canes . Normally flowers appear from the leafless canes but like most Den anosmum (superbum is a variety of anosmum) flowers do regularly appear on he leafy canes as well.
