Visited NYBG in Bronx, NY the other day and thought to share this images
to shed some light on Phaius species and hybrids. I have many images but sorry, I dont hAve time to post them.
There was an earlier post of a Phaius tankervilleae which I believe no longer correspond to the species. Phaius hybrids and species are more getting popular recently. One can go to a library and read recent articles about in the Orchids Magazine of AOS. I am not identifying the earlier posted images, but sharing my understanding on the species and hybrids.
Dan Rosenberg shown here is Mellow Yellow selection. The hybrid comes in pinks, and various colors. I checked the registration and parentage.
registered in 1999, a cross between Phaius tankervilleae and P. tuberculosus ( Thouars) Blume.
If the old nomenclature will be followed this hybrid can still be called a
Phaius... that is if you accept the P. tuberculosus as a Phaius.
P. tuberculosus has been synonimized and is now accepted as
Gastrorchis tuberculosa ( Thouars) Schltr.
This makes it more taxonomically correct to consider the cross an intergeneric, that is why it can be called a Gastrophaius Dan Rosenberg
The Micro Burst has a similar story line. One parent is now taxonomically recognized as a Gastrorchis. So though it is labelled as a Phaius one can more accurately call it as a Gastrophaius Micro Burst.
My references for this: Monocot checklist ( online) and the software orchidwiz.
Hope this helps.
Amy
