Renanthera imschootiana

I have had this orchid for about 2 years. Last year I gave it some direct morning light with shaded evening sun. It grew but no flowering. This year I gave it lots of late evening sun. I grew 3 shoots but as the weather began to get warmer I think it received too much direct light because the flowers bud didn't look healthy. I moved it so it received less light and although there are flowers beginning to open it doesn't appear all of the flowers will open. Looks nice. It is bit difficult one to bloom and care.

What good flowers these are ; much better colour and markings than I have seen. But Ren's are rarely seen in UK. I used to have half a dozen plants, ( species and hybrids - but apart from the yellow one, and also monachica, they all looked the same )and since the flowers lasted a couple of months, and they usually flowered twice a year, I always had a plant to put in a show, and they attracted a lot of attention because of their rarity in UK. I found them quite easy, growing in my greenhouse which was then set to a night minimum temperature of about 16 or 17, and with several layers of 50% shade cloth in the summer,the plants being sprayed with rain water most days.sometimes, in sunny weather several times a day , in attempts to keep the temperature down to 30 or so - it also needed the doors left wide open to succeed, but usually if I did that I could keep those temperatures. Problems came if I was away from home for a week or more, or when other matters ( like my wife in intensive care) meant that they were not touched or looked at for a couple of weeks at a time. Eventually, after serious overheating in such spell of personal problems, a lot of plants suffered serious heat damage, and I scrapped most of the Rens. Kept just a couple - and now with the thermostat set to 12 or 13 instead of 16 or 17, they are growing slower, but I have a couple of spikes developing. I shall find it interesting tosee if my flowers are better at the current lower temperatures.

Beautiful shots of a lovely Ren. Renanthera have always been very difficult to grow for me but their hybrids with vandas and Arachnis and even Paraphalaenopsis have been more forgiving under my growing conditions.
