    Default Paph. Miracle 'Victory' AM/AOS

Paph. Miracle was registered in 1935 by the Sanders nursery, and the clone 'Victory' is one of the truly classic paph cultivars that has been cherished in cultivation for well over half a century. Arising from a Maudiae-type crossed to a complex, Paph. Miracle reliably produces large, deep mahogany-red flowers that ranked among the darkest of paphs until the discovery of the vinicolors. It is a very easy grower under standard paph conditions.

Jason, you write, "until the discovery of the vinicolors." What discovery? Was there some particularly dark Paph form that was subsequently bred for those colors (much like Krull has done with these totally blue Phal violaceas?)

thanks all. if it grows like advertised it should be divisible in a few years. Julie, the vinicolors are a relatively recent phenomenon, maybe over the past 15 years or so. A few very dark clones of Paph. callosum were discovered, you may hear about the cultivar 'JAC' or 'Sparkling Burgundy' as some of the first. from these genes came the dark pigment that we all know and love (well, not all). actually there is supposed to be a variant of callosum with smaller/darker flowers that 'JAC' is a form of; there was some talk about koopowitz re-describing this as a new species "viniferum". I believe that there are some vinicolor cultivars of callosum proper, as well.
