To mount or not to mount

I have such trouble knowing what plants would rather be in pots and which to mount. I'm about to embark on remounting some plants and want to be sure they wouldn't rather be in pots. I also would like to mount some of my potted plants if they would like that better.
I have a large piece of driftwood that looks like a branch and lots of small / mini orchids.
I have Dend laevifolium
Dend strebloceras X Dend Palolo Rainbow
Dend Yellow Chinsai 'Little Joe'
Dend Ise X Kurenai
I have some Restrepia species
Already mounted but needs to be fixed
Bulbo Blumii
Epi. radiatum 'Maui Mint'
Aerangis citrata

Would these rather be in a pot or mounted?
I wonder if there is a way to know which plants prefer what growing mediums... I need a list LOL

Kirstie,

Mounting is as much a question of available humidity as it is the particular plant. Whether you'll be growing in a greenhouse, on a windowsill, or in a terrarium will have a big impact on the answer. I don't believe you have a greenhouse yet, but I know you've been using a terrarium. You can also add to the moisture retention by wrapping the mount in more moss. Mounts will do better in a more humid environment - they're tough on the windowsill.

The other thing to consider is whether the plant wants to dry out between waterings or remain more evenly moist. Plants in the latter group would do better in pots.

I don't know the plants on your list well enough to advise you, but many Dends do like to dry between waterings.

I saw Dend laevifolium mounted in one seller's website, but it will require watering at least once a day, sometimes more when mounted. I only need to water mine (in 2" pot) every 2 or 3 days.

I have my hybrid den Ise in S/H for more than a year now, it even flowered for me.

I'm about ready to do mostly s/h I think..... at least move things over as my budget allows....
