Bringing orchids in for winter

With our fairly mild weather I try to keep my orchids outside for as much of the year as possible.

For the last couple nights the temperature has been down in the low to mid 40s and I'm thinking it may be time to bring them into the greenhouse for the winter. I would just do it but I have one den that is blooming and three more with spikes of various lengths. Everytime I bring a blooming den inside so I can enjoy the flowers it has proven to be the death of them--the flowers, not the plants.

My question is, should I go ahead and bring them in, and, if so, what can I do to keep from losing the blooms?

Bring them in. If they get much cooler, they will blast anyway and you could end up loosing more than just the bloom/buds. My vote: Bring them in!

You will need to wait for someone else to comment on how to keep from loosing the blooms. My guess is the drastic change from really cool outside to fairly warm inside. It could also be the humidity. Try keeping the humidity up and that my help.

Try putting them in the garage for a couple days. It's warmer than outside, but not as warm as inside. Then move into the house. And definitely try to keep the humidity up.

Thanks for the replys and suggestions. Since I don't have a garage I will have to bring them into the greenhouse but I can keep the temp in the gh a little lower than the rest of the house, especially at night. I can't keep it too cold during the day because the gh is also my master bath (yes, I have an all-glass bathroom, one of those Four Seasons sunrooms.)

I used to have woods on three sides so, yes, the wild animals got a kick out of it.

Now that the woods have been replaced by large two-story homes I have custom blinds and strategically placed curtains, but the ceiling still gets full sun and views of the moon and stars.

I once drew up plans (rough plans) for a house for my wife and i,the master bedroom was all glass from floor to celing you know like the green houses attached to the home with curved eave and all.I used to dream about sleeping in there with the rain falling or an a clear night looking at the stars.Any way sounds great and a great use of the house
