    Default Bulb. echinolabium

    Hello Everyone,

    I'm a new member here and this is my first post. Here is a photo of my Bulb. echinolabium. The flower is about 10' long and the only draw back is it only last about 5-7 days. I'm still trying to bloom the other one, Bulb. bicolor thou. lol

    welcome...great picture!! echinolabium is a wonderful, large Bulbo with a fragrance like dog poop Even though the flower is fairly short lived, it is a sequential bloomer.

    Beautiful flower! Part of me would love to try one but the plant is just too darned big.

    The ones I've seen at shows haven't been all that strongly fragrant but perhaps I caught them at a lucky moment.

    I think Bulbo is such an interesting genus. The diversity of flowers is broad. The size of the plants vary from a cm to ones with leaves that are 4-5 feet long. There are stinkers, ones that are sweetly fragrant to attract pollinators and ones without a fragrance. Echinolabium obviously is pollinated by flies.

    I find it very fascination how orchids have developed fragrances or shapes to get pollinated. Long spurs to accommodate the probiscus of moths, mimicry of the opposite sex of wasps, ant ladders, and fragrances of feces, dead meat & fish to attract flies, pouches to temp. trap insects and some are only fragrant or open at the time of the day that their pollinators are active. Have you ever seen a night only fragrant orchid that is any color than white? Orchids are totally fascinating!!!
