OrchidTalk announces world wide competition to grow our article library!
It is time to grow our article library again and this time we have a sponsor who wishes to award the top two articles / photo-essays entered into the competition. Beyond the great information that will be added to our library for all to use, two winners will receive a gift certificates to the vendor of her/his choice in that member's country for the equivalent of $25 US dollars. These gift certificates can be used to purchase a new orchid, or any other orchid related product that your chosen vendor carries.
SO, now that I have your attention, to enter this competition here is what you need to do:
The photo essay/journals can be on any genera. They should include a "normal" photo and then at least 3 or 4 disease or bug examples.
The objective would be to have a ready reference for common ailments along side of the normal photos.
The essays could be about leaves or roots for that matter. The goal being a way to show growers new to the species or genera what is normal and common problems.
The essays should be by kind (type) of orchid so that it could be used like a reference for that kind of orchid. So, if a member or guest has a question about a particular plant, s/he can compare it to the "normals" and the other photos to help diagnose the problem.
Some suggested Ideas:
- Common bug damage for your species--how to know what kind of bugger you have from the signs they leave behind.
- Leaves for your species: falling off from normal aging vs disease. What color of green when grown well, standing up or floppy etc etc etc.
- Roots--normal, healthy, vs decay, signs of problems etc
- Diseases--photos of common rots, spots and problems.

How long should the photo/ essays - articles be in length?
Any length is fine as long as they cover the ideas stated above. Articles entered that do not meet the criteria above may not be considered in the competition. We are looking for a minimum of the following: The name of the type of orchid pictured, a photo of its normal growth 'look', and two or more different ailments that are common with that type of orchid. The ailments should be clearly identified and pictured in the photo. The photos should also be labeled to clearly show which photo is what problem, etc... Your photo/essay doesn't need to be fancy, only accurate and easy to read.
Where should the article be posted?
Please use the article software for your article. Upload your photos to the article and use inline images so there is no worry of lost information in the future.

Everyone who grows an orchid is encouraged to enter! To be considered for the competition, all entered information must be the original work of the member posting. Please do not post someone else's work. Have fun and enjoy growing the knowledge base of our forum's library!
