Hi. I'm a newbie from the Philippines. Recently, I bought two mature (flowering size) Euanthe (Vanda) Sanderiana and placed them under shade with bright skylight. They are not yet flowering because their season to do so is between July to October. I noticed that the lower roots on their trunks are woody and some root tips are wilted/emaciated. These roots are dry although I water them two times every day (they are hanging in their baskets). I also apply a systemic fungicide with copper compound every week. I cut the emaciated roots in fear that it could be infected by a fungus. I also cut many woody roots because they appeared sick to me (no velamen inside, just brown dried material). Luckily, there are some healthy roots left (they turn green every time I water them).
My question is, is it normal for mature Vanda Sanderianas to have old woody roots? Based on the articles I read from the internet, Sanderianas are slow growing orchids (even their roots are hard to grow). Hence, I feel hesitant every time I cut their roots. Please help. Thank you.
