Vanda lamellata Var boxalii - this is a good sign, right?

These roots started sprouting around the first week of July and here they are today. Each one is about 4 inches long and about 1/2 inch thick. They also appear to grow faster each day.

I have not really tried vandas before I built the GH so I dont have much experience with these orchids.
Are these root growth patterns normal for vandas? why are they pointing up?
I thought vanda roots are supposed to drag downwards?

The plant is in a 4 inch empty plastic basket.


Heres a shot of the whole plant along with other vandas. It is the one in the center.


This appears to be the most vigorous grower in the bunch.
The two terrete leafed vandas to the right are growing new leaves but no noticeable new root activity.
The other strap leafed vanda to the left is just sitting there with no new leaves or roots.

They look very normal to me. I think the roots will arch down with gravity as they get longer. I would not worry, they roots look wonderful and are a sign of good care.

My own boxallii is currently growing those fat roots as well.

Bad news there, Wetfeet. Such growth indicates that your vanda is going to try to TAKE OVER THE WORLD!!! BWAHAHHAHAH!

On a different note, looks like ya got an awful lot of empty space in your greenhouse.....

I was thinking it looked a little empty, too.

And those are ROOTS?! Holy crow those are thick buggers. Looks like it will reach out and attack anything walking too close.

I agree with the empty GH. I'm accepting donations of any warm/intermediate growing genus though

I only have about 100 orchids, and with the current setup the GH should be able to house at least 300

I would love a green house...then I could go have many shopping expeditions. For now with my current porch and front window...i'm about full up. Too many orchids, not enough windowsills.

I have Vandas that grow roots just like that.
