Painting the lounge!

To much eye rolling from OH, I insisted that all my orchids were moved into the kitchen. I presume I did right? Judi

Its a safe move. I am not sure what kind of paint is used in your area but some can have harmful fumes that are detrimental to orchids - similar to tobacco smoke exposure.

I have also seen quite a few horror posts about paint spilling on orchids and some to the point of total loss.
*A contractor actually painted [compressed sprayer] someone's outside wall without relocating the vandas that were hanging on poles about 2 feet away from the wall. The result is that the sides of the vandas facing the wall are now colored mocha.

Sometimes you all read my mind....we are getting ready to have our house painted and I was wondering if it would bother my 'chids. Thanx for asking this one Judi. How long will the fumes bother them? Would 24 hours be long enough outside??

That is terrible! The same thing happened to my car. It was parked a good 15 feet away from the house, but the wind carried the "bright Victorian yellow" sprayed paint from the house to spot all over my dark blue green car. It all washed off with some scrubbing, but it was not fun. I am sure it would make the orchids where they could not breath if they were coated. Better to move them and be safe rather than sorry.

Reminds me of one of the toy cars I had when I was a kid; the ones that change colour when you put them in warm or cold water. Sometimes it got confused and went all polka dot.

As far as orchids and paint go. I don't like paint on me so why would plants. I'd say get them out of there.
And I don't even want to get started on those fumes. They just painted the gym in my building and I tried working out the same night; I almost went blue and green and had to stop.

I recently painted and just moved all the orchids to different rooms until I was done, and then a few days after so the fumes could clear out as the paint dried. Everyone survived (with just one tiny yellow spot on a phal leaf), (but I'm still not sure how it got there since I moved it!)
