Identification help

I'm not sure if this is exactly where I should be posting this question, but here goes. I have a dendrobium that was given to me as a gift. It was blooming when I received it, since then the flowers have fallen off and it is growing a new cane. My question is this. Can anybody help me to identify the actual species or hybrid that the plant is? If it was blooming, I would post pics of it to help. The tag that came with it identified nothing other than the fact that it was a den. All it said was Dendrobium Blue 132. The blooms are a real dark purple. The books I have divide dendrobium culture into six different cultural groups, and since I don't really know what it is, I don't really know how to care for it. It seems to be doing well, but I would like to be a little more knowledgeable in its needs. I dont even know if it is hard cane or soft cane, or how to tell for that matter. Thanks.

Sorry Kiddo, you probably will never get a name for you Dend, there are so many hybrids. You will have to enjoy it as a NOID (No ID) and besides they are all pretty named or not.

Or try doing a search on the web for pics of purple dens and see if there is one that looks like yours.

Molly Taco (Cin) is probably right. There is no way of positive identification.

You say the flowers are purple and the blooming spike probably comes from the top of the canes, huh? You most likely have a hard cane dend from the phalaenthae (sp?) or spatulata section. The culture for these plants is warm temps, bright light all year long and a very slight drying out between waterings. These plants can be grown slightly cooler if kept drier...

A lot of big Hawaiian hybridizers just number their hybrids until they find one really worthy of an award. For this particular section of dends, think "Hawaii" year round...(more or less)..
