How to tell root growth?

I have several plants that are in stages of active growth. A few of them I would like to repot for one reason or another, but I don't know if they are growing new roots right now. I know the ideal time to repot would be during new root growth. Some of my plants I can see when they grow new roots, but most I can't. So, does new root growth coincide with new plant growth, or what?

For phals, there is no other way: ease the plant out of the pot and check for new root tips, looking whiter or greener or longer (the tip is acute and sometimes pink)than the rest. Some may be growing from roots already established, some may be growing from under the crown, some may even poke through the media and heading upwards (aerials). Also, the active roots and tips have no velamen on them yet, so they won't look as silver as the rest.
So far I've noticed that root growth has no relation with leaf growth.

All plants are different and produce roots in different seasons or in different stages of growth. Catts should be repotted when the newest lead is forming new roots...You can safely pot phals after their Spring blooming period...If you can't see the roots growing on a monopodial orchid...it's probably safe to repot as the days grow longer in early Spring. Sympodial orchids are usually pretty easy to see...(maybe not with terrestrials like Paphs)
