Delaware Water gap, native plants

Hi all!

My husband and I recently took a trip to the Pocono Raceway, and stopped at the Delaware Water Gap on the way - he was dying to try his luck at fishing. I was astounded by all the lovely blooming plants I found alond the waterside; particularly the orange one below that looked like a tiny lobster. I've been trying to figure out what it is - has anyone seen this before?

Those are cool shots, Becky. I really like the blue flowers (first one in the last set). I bet that will be something when in full bloom.

The yellow with the orange is Jewelweed, (Impatiens capensis). It grows in damp places and is an annual. The juices from the stems can be used to treat poison Ivy. (I am a hiker/back packer...it comes in handy knowing natural remedies, particularly when you are in the back country for a week at a time)

Ha, Ron, you jumped in ahead of me on the jewel-weed! I've used that, too! (I used to pack along the trail before I started packing the extra weight at home!

If you head back to that area soon, you might want to look in the shady glens for a small "pogonia" orchid that grows like a violet. Nice bright magenta color on little one-inch blossoms. And of course you might come across a showy Lady's Slipper in those hills....

Oh neat, I'm so glad you knew what that plant was! Jewel weed....it was just so cute, I really liked it. Thanks for letting me know the ID! And Laurent, no, Philip caught nothing - its so sad, we've been fishing several times this summer and he still hasn't caught a darn thing - and we've tried every bait!!! Its sad
