Paph Shin-Yi Fireball

I just got this a few days ago and so can't claim credit for blooming it, It came with 4 fans and 2 spikes, one of which had blooms that were past their prime. Paph Shin-Yi Fireball is Paph Berenice x Paph Genevieve Booth, a cross of the multifloras with philippinense, lowii,stonei, and rothchildianum. I had expected better looking blooms but I think the dominance of philippinense is quite apparent. Can't understand the "Fireball' epithet.

I don't believe this is Shin-Yi Fireball. The colors exhibited in your flower do not exist in those four species. I suspect that whatever this hybrid is, there is a large amount of callosum or similar species in the background. Two questions: how many flowers per spike, and are the leaves solid green or patterned?

Thanks Michael for your comments. I am not sure myself whether this is Shin Yi Fireball and so I checked on the internet and found only a few pictures of it. They showed a very varied hybrid and only one of which bears some resemblance to mine and I must admit I'm quite disappointed with mine.

To answer your questions Q #1 - 2 flowers on the existing spike and 3 on the older one that has broken.
Q #2 - Leaves are solid green resembling rothchildianum and lowii
and not mottled like callosum


I'm afraid I've to disagree with you that the colours do not exist in the 4 paphs I mentioned. (I'm posting pictures of these 4 paphs in my collection. Unfortunately, the picture of the philippinense flower is of one that had been pecked on by the birds and the rest were also destroyed by the birds.) The dorsal sepal and the synsepal resemble those of philippinense and the colour, particularly on the lower half of the lateral petals is purplish like those of lowii. The dorsal sepal is much narrower and pointed, rather than broad as in callosum(which I have recently posted).

I mentioned the dominance of philippinense because Paph Berenice is 50% philippinense and Paph Genevieve Booth is at least 25% from the Mount Toro.

can you please give me advice on how to take care of those beauties since a bought one yesterday and my first time to have a kind of this orchid.
please advice on medium (mine i got it in a soil with gravel and broken teracota pots)
watering, humidity
ligth.
fertilizer.

Just one man's opinion. In any case, I understand your disappointment. (I may not have been as clear as I should. the colors I meant were the purple and green in their location on the flower)

Thanks Jeffry. I know some of my friends grow them in the same medium as yours. However, my growing medium consists of river stones at the bottom and above that a mixture of coarse sand, gravel, broken charcoaal chips, small pieces (finger-tip size) of broken bricks and styrofoam and a top dressing of broken pieces of fern root to 1/2 inch thick. I water them twice a day, weekly, weakly foliar fertiliser 21:21;21. and a dressing of slow release Osmocote.

Yew, I've done a bit of research. Yours could be a named but unfortunately a very average one. Its hard to determine if the name is exact given some of the features the flower displays but not know if the hybridist actually used a mislabelled plant in he process we'll neer know. I can't see any reason not to leave the name as is.

Regardless of the name, Yew Sung, I bet when you grow this orchid for a season, the next set of blooms will be so much better. Good culture should improve the blooms on this slipper orchid. Wonderful that it has so many flowers per spike! I would love it with or without a name.

Thanks a lot Roy. I guess I'll just have to accept the tag as it is. The vendor told me it was imported from Taiwan. Yes I think it is less than average.
