Initially I didn't want to post pictures of this orchid as I had just bought it about 3 weeks ago at an orchid show after it had travelled thru 2 orchid shows. Most of the buds had dried up and blasted. But I decided to post the pictures after BD posted pics of his Rhy gigantea and this cross had Rhy gigantea in its bloodline.
Renanthera hybrids have a reputation of being difficult to grow and bloom. Moreover they grow quite big and takes forever to reach blooming size. I have a Ren Nancy Chandler( a keiki from a friend) that is now 3ft tall after 5 years, and still no sign of it blooming.
This cross is Rnst Azimah (Ren Nancy Chandler x Rhy gigantea) x Ren Bangkok Flame. The Renanthera lineage runs the whole gamut of renantheras including storeii, coccinea, imschootiana and monachica. However, the Rhy gigantea seems to impart the very desirable qualities to it - ease of growth, free flowering from a small size ,non-fading flowers, plus the branching flower spike habit of the renantheras. There were 3 plants for sale with varying degrees of red - one a 'loud' red, another a rather subdued pinkish red and this one, an in-between. Of course I wish I had the money to buy all three!

Pic # 4 The plant 15in tall with 12 pairs of leaves showing remnants of old spike and the current one; 8 bloomings altogether but strangely all on one side of the plant only.
