What bulb/tuber/rhizome stuff are you planting this year?

I used to grow a lot of dahlias, but I'm down to only two this year. I think I'm doing about 30 varieties of cannas and a few other misc. things.

What you all planting?

This year I'm not planting much, I'm working on thinning. Two years ago I went crazy with my almost empty raised beds, and now of course things are maturing and filling out and so it looks wild and crowded.

I will put in lycoris if/when I get some, and that's about it for the long-lived stuff. Except that I'm going to try Kev's advice about planting the amarylis in the ground for the summer, so I'll have to create a summer home for the ones I have.

I might have to put in new hosta. Hubby decided to weed-eat in the back yard this weekend which is all grass for the dogs, except for one area I put Hosta in the fall. He did not know this. He sees the large newly emerging leaves and says to himself: "what is that godawful huge ugly weed we've got coming up there this year?" and WHACKS it to heck! Before I go out there, I tell him how glad I am he weed-whacked so the hostas won't get grown over by grass and he gets this look:

"um, what's hosta look like?"

Sigh. Gotta love him, but darn that hosta was coming up so good, and the slugs hadn't even taken one bite out of them this year...

In my experience, Ronnie-Sue, Hostas are the energizer bunny of the plant world. They'll come back so that he can whack them yet again!

I'm trying cannas for the first time (they're sprouting in my zip loc bags!!) I have iris and tons of lilies, and I ordered a bunch of the tall bearded iris from Schreiners (they won't ship till July, which is planting time, so no flowers on those till next year.)

I did not plant anything this year in the way of bulbs . Lilies , Glads. Dahlias stay in the ground all winter . I am out of planting space until I get Miss Tillette out and give her an attitude adjustment . Gin

OK, you asked what I'm planting this year. I assume you mean other than what's already there? (If you were to include already there stuff, that would include bearded & Siberian iris, scilla, a number of lilies and a couple of tulips.


This year, for the first time, I'm trying cannas! Uh, well, at least *a*canna. Some kind person (Kyle--I hope he doesn't mind being named) read my earlier questions about them and asked if I'd like one! For just a second I wondered how he knew I was interested--then I realized he's on the RVO forum. At any rate, I've potted it in a large container and hope it will fill it up. No idea what color the flowers will be, but it I don't have to worry about duplication!

Well, the Amorphophallus went into pots yesterday--they started sprouting in their box--so it shouldn't be long before their petioles (is that right?) appear above soil level.... I stuck the tubers about 3-4 inches down. Hope that wasn't too deep!

That should be fine. I think tubers do a bit better if they are planted a bit deep. Most people plant them much too shallow.
