Fish - Food?

I've often thought about having a small fish pond - very small. But we have lots of raccoons around here and I seem to remember that they tried fishing in the goldfish pond we had at my parent's house. Does anyone have that problem?

We have dogs to keep out the other critters...lol! I can only imagine how frustrating that would be to find a raccoon eating out of your koi pond. (Those fish are expensive!)

Diane, you would definitely have to put a fence or something around it to keep the raccoons away, no doubt. Specially if the pond is small or shallow, and there's nowhere the fish can go to hide. Maybe you can make a container pond indoors? I did one once out of a really big, cylindrical clay pot you would normally plant a tree in, plugged the hole at the bottom and painted the inside with black waterproofing. You could maybe do something similar and avoid the critter problem altogether.

If you do not have your pond at least 18" deep the raccoons will use it as their own swim up fish buffet !!! We have never had raccoon problems and we live where there are tons ! A neighbor however ,had one of the shallow different depth ponds with expensive koi that the raccoons dined on !
Our ponds are the same depth all over...sink or swim!
