burana beauty orchid bloom issue

I'm brand new and have a small collection but have a problem with my burana beauty - have had it for more than 2 years and it has not bloomed yet. Looks healthy and happy - gotten to quite a nice sized plant. Roots look great - just hasn't bloomed yet. Have been using fertilizer as recommended - any suggestions. victoria

Hi Victoria,

Sounds like your plant needs more light. More often that not when an orchid is large / mature enough to bloom and it is not - it is because of insufficient light. Try to increase the light levels for this orchid. It should get between 2K and 3K foot candles of light in order to bloom.

I'm not certain what the foot candles means but my plant is in a very sunny kitchen which has bright light from 11 AM to 7 PM . It's not in Hot sun but my other plant Cattleya Petite Star which was purchased at the same time has bloomed more than 8 times - the plants are the same size and have been treated the same...

I would do as Bruce suggests, but what I have observed from my Burana Beauty is that they don't like to repotted, I got mine in June 2007 blooming, then repotted it, it then grew continuously for 3 years without blooming, till it had become potbound and the new growths had started overflowing from the pot, and this year, there is not one month when it is not blooming, so patience my friend. Below see the picture of my Burana beauty which is now finally pot bound and blooming vigorously.

Hi Halloamey - come to think of it the plant was repotted about a year ago because it was in a very small pot- your photo is lovely - thanks for your help - I will make certain to allow it to become rootbound - I'll let you know if it works.
