Hi all,
I'm having trouble keeping the pseudobulbs on my oncids plump and happy. I have a couple that have the wrinkled leaves....and it seems like once I get them shriveling I have a hard time getting them happy again. *sigh*
I live in the western US where we get less than 12 inches of rain a year, and the humidity is almost nonexistant (nice when it's in the 100's like this past week!). I grow indoors, we have AC that we run usually the whole month of July and half or so of August then windows open until heating season. I do run a humidifier in my living room for my birds and orchids in the winter.
My oncids are in a south facing window with a sheer curtain...they are all on humidity trays (lot of good that's doing me...LOL), most of them are in plastic pots, and most of them are in a pretty standard bark mix...a few have a little bit of sphag mixed in.
I water 2-3 times a week in the summer.....have been soaking them one a month or so. Today I used the 'haul everyone to the sink for a good long drink' method, but otherwise I've just been watering them in place with a watering can.
Thoughts...suggestions? Most are sending up happy looking new growth, one is about to rebloom (Oncid. ornithorhynchum) with a nice looking bloom stalk. But, the pseudobulbs are telling me these guys are TOO dry/lacking humidity.....
Thanks!
MtEquine
