    Default Barkeria scandens?

This is the first time this plant is flowering for me. Labelled B scandens, but am not sure. Petals and lips look different.

It is quite temperemental: last year it aborted its spike when I moved the pot 10 cm's down, such that the spike wouldn't hit the glass. This year it hit the glass, but as a result the top buds aborted.

Interesting and different orchid bloom. Is this a terrestrial type orchid? I don't know anything about it. Did you happen to take a photo of the plant too?

    cheers,
    BD

Not terrestrial: it's an epiphyte closely related to Cattleya and Epidendrum. Growth habitus is similar to Epidendrum.

Hmmm, that doesn't looks like any scandens I've seen before. I'm inclined to say "no" but will wait on someone more knowledgable.

Thanks, Lars. After posting that, I looked it up and found some interesting facts about this orchid. The main thing I remembered was that the orchid needs very high light and humidity with lots of air movement. And I noted that of the 12 -15 photos in Owiz, none had as much white as your bloom. Most are very dark - almost solid magenta in color. I like the white found in the one you bloomed.

    cheers,
    BD

Difficult to tell from this angle of the flower, but could be barkeria skinneri or some other species.
