Schomburgkias- moyobambae maybe ?
I have flowered four different Schomb. species this year , at least I have four different plant names, but the flowers are very much look-alike, and I can't even make up my mind which of the four names is the right one, or maybe I do have four different species and they are all so similar as to make one ask further questions. I have started reading Withners volume about this genus - and by the way he says the confusion over whether they are Laelias or not comes down to whether you are a lumper or a splitter, and since they are such a definite grouping on their own, in terms of what they look like, how they flower, and even how they grow, he is a splitter here - they are a distinct genus.
Whatever ; this one I have labelled as S. moyobambae; it may be one which other splitters would make a Myremecophila , but Withner points out that that name means "ant lover" and there are species of Schombo' which have hollow bulbs lived in by ants - there could be a symbiotic relationship - but that geus name should be reserved foir those species. This one does not have hollow bulbs - QED as we used to say in doing geometry proofs when I was at school.
S.thompsonae is the second of the four I refer to in flower now, and very much the same - that follows in a separate post. The other two I flowered earlier this year and which also looked the same are S.splendida, and SA. rposea, and I didn't take any p[ics of them at the time.
Comments about these questions ( especially) from those with actual experience of buying these plants from the few South American nurseries who visit the international shows and who may have bought from the same stock as me will be of much interest to me !
