My Oncidium Sharry Baby ( yellow flash )

I like this Oncidium orchid , i saved it from dying in the shopping market as snails was eating it away...this is the first time it has bloomed for me so im very happy lol...it gives of a wonderful fragrance ...I believe it is Sharry baby (yellow flash) please correct me if im wrong...
Ive noticed two of the leaves are getting yellow in the middle of the leaves...not sure if this is normal ? you will see what i mean in the photos.

You may need to check the health of the roots in the bark. Can see yellowing occuring which can be a symptom of under/ over watering. With majority of orchids the biggest killer is watering errors and too much causing root rot.. Make sure your bark isnt saturated and the roots can breathe. if the roots have all gone brown/ mushy you will need to address the problem as the plant isnt taking up water through roots and the pseudo bulbs will be exhausted as the plant uses up the reserves of water and nutrient and shrivel/ wrinkle. Oncidium roots are like dendros and are thin and white and both these will suffer from constant moisture/ wet at the roots and rot. Allow to dry between waterings.

Not long ago i had to repot it so all the roots are fine nice and white and many new ones growing....you see when i got it,their was loads of baby snales living in the pot and they had eaten two holes in the main bulb i treated them and cleaned the roots and repotted it so it got a better chance to survive......maybe because i had it on my window and the sun was to much for it ? now i have it partly in the shade.seems the medium drys very fast i do water it every 4th day i always test about 2 inches deep as i was told never let orchids completely dry out...i also go by the waite of the pot....i do feed my orchids every time i water but half the strength maybe this is the problem ?

When i buy a new orchid i always glean it and repot it,as i dont want other peoples insects and so on spreading to my other ones....can i ask you...can these be potted in clear pots ?

I think anything can be potted in a clear pot. I would say if you feed at every watering, you may be getting a buildup of salts, etc. You should flush with plain water every third watering.

Besides those two yellow marks on the leaves the plant looks fine. Perhaps a little bit too much sun? Snails are a real problem. I have used beer, snail bait (poisonous), and copper strips. And they keep on coming!!!!
As for feeding "weakly-weekly" is used by many commercial growers but as 1/4 to 1/8 normal dose. Lovely blooms!

Ive found beer to be a successful bait for the delightful? mollusc guests. A bottle cap/ egg cup sunken into media with a dose of beer/ lager works wonders, entices them in and then drown. Potatoes/ orange peel and copper coins all good as measures to control, reduce and eliminate. Many growers refuse to accept the presence of snails as culprits with the abscence of slime tracks etc but the babies can be so tiny but the damage sufficient to launch a full scale war. New leads/shoots and spikes/buds are particularly vulnerable to a point where a grower can be devastated at signs of attack.



Clear pots are certainly an advantage, but i cannot talk or comment on pot culture as I kill all orchids this way. Only plants in pots are jungle cacti, heliconias and epiphyllums amongst others but this is soley due to the science fact that orchid roots need air circulation bar the few exceptions of terrestrials.

P.s Purchased this very plant again!!! today from our local garden center reduced section, but not so many buds. Will soon remove spike as flowers fade. Gorgeous large plump pseudobulbs! My personal pre emptive strike with this one will be to mount it at an angle, have had far too many casualties as a result of crown rot with these multi bracts and open leaf axils. The last went into a very quick decline in the pot within a fortnight and is now a leafless victim tied to bark in my hospital zone awaiting the trigger to grow on. Should have dealt with it straight away knowing full well that because I do 90% of my watering via spraying due to mounted culture an 'epiphyte' sitting upright in a pot is not good in my hands even with air circulation.
