White Paph Hybrids???

Hi y'all. While I'm waiting for the delivery of my first Paph. niveum, I was thinking about other white paphs, and I know there are at least a few noted hybrids. I know Paph Deperle is one, and I have seen where Bruce has posted Paph. Armeni White and Paph Deception II. I love and intend to collect all of these eventually.

But, just for the thrill of it, what are some of the other notable white paph hybrids? Are there any that don't have brachypetalum alliance parentage?

I'd really appreciate any suggestions - I'm trying to expand my Maudiae collection and I'd like to have some whites - but not alba forms of species - too expensive and tricky to grow. I have a spicerianum and a lowii now, a niveum on the way, and that's challenging enough for me at this early point in my orchid career.

Whites are possible among Parvisepalum hybrids both within Parvisepalum and with other sections, as you have noted with Armeni-White and Deperle. As in both these cases, Paph delenatii is well know to suppress color in its hybrids and lots of whites and near whites result, so look among delenatii hybrids and you will find whites. Paph Harumi is a nice multi-floral that is usually white (haynaldianum x delenatii).

Most other white/mostly white/white background Paph hybrids (as opposed to the green and white 'alba' forms known in many species*) come from Brachypetulum ancestry, again both within Brachypetalum and with other sections. Paph Astarte is a classic old white from Brachy ancestry (Psyche x insigne), and among its offspring like Chastity, Rosy Dawn and F.C. Puddle there are many mostly white forms, as just some examples of 'complex' white hybrids. Paph Ron Williamson is especially easy to grow and semi-sequential flowering (primulinum x niveum). Paph Woluwense (rothschildianum x niveum) or Paph Vipanii (philippinense x niveum) are nothing short of spectacular if you can find one and get it to flower. They tend to be white with pink stripes rather than pure white.

*There are many inexpensive and easily grown green and white hybrids like Paph Muadiae and related types.

That's a great wealth of information, Kirk, and I truly thank you for it! You have me obsessed now with finding a Woluwense or Vipanii. I've already collected as many Maudiae-type albas as I want for the moment - they were among the first I tried, and I loved some of the forms, really disliked others. I much prefer vinicolors and flames when it comes to Maudiaes - hence my search for whites within or between the other alliances. I'll go to work on tracking down some of the names you provided - I'm pretty familiar with the F.C. Puddle genealogy, but would like to avoid the standard-complex paphs - I just don't like too many of them. Niveum crosses sound like just the thing. Thanks again.
