Default General light requirements for Cattleyas

I comfortable with the lighting I am supplying my Phal's - east facing window.

But, I've read that Catt's require "good" light. During the winter up hear around Chicago I've kept my new Catt's in a south facing window and they seem to be doing fine. But, now with warmer weather and more intense sun light I am confused what type of light to give them. What does "good" light mean? South facing but just off to the side so they get just a little direct sun light? South facing window w/ a sheer piece of fabric? If that is it, what type of fabric? Thanks.

A good idea is to get a light meter that gives you ideas about the footcandles method. Rather than guessing " good light " can mean bright and indirect Catts like to have 2500 - 3500 FC thats almost double what Phals need
With summer arriving for you guys in the north the sun can be strong , i would suggest something like a shade cloth that you can take down and put up easily, i'm not familiar with how much curtains can protect from strong UV though.

On the subject of light meters - I finally caved and bought one - about $30. Now, as I suspected, with the way my southern exposure is cut back severely by the awning over my deck, I've discovered that I don't have nearly the light I need for most of my orchids. Have to do something about that posthaste. I second the suggestion that you invest in a light meter!
