My Paphiopedilum lowii

Talking of orchid addiction, I recently got this beautiful Paphiopedilum lowii already in bloom. I am becoming more impatient it seems, I have a few seedlings of lowii back home in India but it has been 2 years and they haven't bloomed it. And when I saw this one I couldn't miss it. It si not the most dark colored lowii I have seen, but it has a nice shape and a beautiful pattern on the lateral sepals, plus the flower quality is really good since the vendor informed me that the plant has been in bloom for the past 4 weeks.

What a gorgeous lowii, Amey! And the photos are fabulous - looks like the photography gene is in your blood as well as your sister's. I'm extremely jealous - I haven't been able to find a lowii anywhere near spiking for months now. Mine is looking much better, but certainly nowhere near blooming again. Your plant has a nice tall, strong-looking stem, which is always a plus, and any fade in the color is most likely due to the age of the bloom - or sun fade, if it was in too bright an area at the nursery. I agree that the pattern on the laterals is lovely. Will you repot in S/H when it's done blooming?

Yew - I'm just curious - when does your lowii bloom? Does it ever bloom more than once a year - or less? Seems the lowii season started in February or so here and it's later elsewhere. IS there a lowii season?

Maura, mine bloomed in late January last year. Paph lowii has a very extended blooming season here - from Jan to May. I have seen a few in bloom in Aug in a nursery in the Cameron Highlands where they are found in the wild many as epiphytes. I don't know if they bloom more than once a year but if you have a big clump of them with multiple leads they could well bloom in sequence within the long blooming season.
